When an electrical shock incident is investigated, the immediate cause is often easy to identify.

Someone worked on equipment that was still live. An isolation failed. A circuit wasn’t where it was expected to be. A protective device didn’t operate as intended.

But that’s rarely the whole story.

In our experience, electrical accidents are almost never caused by a single mistake. They happen because several small problems have built up over time. On their own, they may seem insignificant. Put them together and they create the conditions for a serious incident.

Maintenance is about much more than reliability

We often hear people say, “They’re qualified, so they’re competent.” Unfortunately, the two aren’t always the same.

Qualifications demonstrate knowledge at a particular point in time. Competence comes from applying that knowledge correctly, understanding the equipment being worked on and recognising when something doesn’t look right.

Even experienced engineers can lose familiarity with procedures they don’t use every day. Training isn’t just about teaching new skills; it’s about reinforcing critical ones, introducing changes to legislation and standards, and challenging the shortcuts that can creep into everyday working.

Just as importantly, good training gives people the confidence to stop a job if they believe something isn’t safe.

The organisations with the strongest safety records don’t see training as a compliance exercise carried out every few years. They see it as an ongoing investment in their people and one of the most effective ways of reducing electrical risk.

A strong safety culture makes all the difference

The safest organisations don’t rely on luck or assume that accidents won’t happen.

They encourage people to question what they’re doing, stop work if something doesn’t feel right and report issues before they become serious problems. Managers understand their responsibilities, and engineers know that following the procedure is always the right decision, even when production pressures are high.

That culture can’t be created overnight, but it has a direct impact on reducing electrical risk.

Looking beyond compliance

Meeting your legal obligations is essential, but compliance should be the starting point rather than the finish line.

The organisations with the strongest electrical safety records are those that regularly review their procedures, assess competence, maintain accurate documentation and continually invest in developing their people.
